La Colonne Détruite at the Desert de Retz
Thursday September 5th – arrive in Paris
Friday September 6th – travel by train and bus to visit La Picassiette in Chartres. Raymond Isidore spent 33 years covering his house and garden with broken pottery and tiles, inside and out, including furniture, cooker, and bathroom. Astonishing
Saturday 7th September – travel by minibus to the Desert de Retz near Paris. Created in the 18th century and perhaps the quintessential folly garden. It includes a three storey house in the shape of a ruined column.
Sunday 8th September – morning visit to the Parc de Butte Chaumont in Paris. Created in an old quarry it has a temple and an amazing 20 metre high grotto with a waterfall.
You may wish to extend your stay and see some of the other delights of Paris, for instance visit the catacombs, or descend into the sewers!
This is a ‘pay as you go’ trip i.e. you are responsible for travel costs and entry fees. Approximate return fare to La Picassiette is £30, entry 7 euros. Minibus to the Desert de Retz £35, entry 10 euros. There is no public transport to the Desert de Retz so I have booked a minibus for 16 people. To reserve a place on this trip please pay in advance for the minibus through the Folly Fellowship website.
